Top Ten Online Teaching Tips

Most teachers that begin teaching online have not gone through any formalized training focus on teaching via the internet. Teaching online, although very similar to teaching in the classroom, is also very different. Teachers have to be able to transfer information to student with little to not interaction. Therefor it is imperative that teachers have well thought out lessons and cover every detail in their lessons that they can reasonably assume student may have questions on. Here is a list of top tips for teachers while preparing online courses.

1) Outline your course

Make sure you sit down and outline your course to start. This will ensure that you are taking a natural progression in the flow of the class.

2) Add examples

Because student often do not have the opportunity to ask you questions, make sure you give many examples that maybe allow them to see the answers to their many questions.

3) Brainstorm questions student may have

If you can think of a bunch of questions that student would have on a lesson or topic, make sure to include the answer in your lesson. Trying ending your class with a common FAQ list.

4) Keep you structure simple

It is best to keep the class structure simple. You can have a countless number of classes online, so many sure you use the same structure in each class. This way student will get use to your teaching patterns.

5) Pick one topic

Don’t make a long class covering too many topics. Keep the focus of the class on one subject and cover it in depth. When you have a new topic to discuss, created a new class to do so.

6) Find a mentor

If you know someone who has done online teaching before, ask them to sit down and tell you how the operate. Ask them to see some of their courses. Have them easily at hand to help you with any future questions.

7) Ask student for feedback

After a student has viewed your class, ask them for feedback. From their feedback you will be able to address other questions student may have in the future and therefor better your class.

8) Provide supplementary materials

Some students will learn better if you have print materials to go with your class. An outline of the class may help others as well. Make sure to try to include these notes with your video.

9) Make it fun

Everyone learns better when they are in a good mood. Keep your course fun, engaging, and entertaining.

10) Stress the details

This really couldn’t be more important. Without student interaction, you must focus on providing every detail of information in your video. Try not to leave anything out or make assumptions of prior knowledge.

How to Edit Your PowerLearning21 Videos

Basic video editing can be a breeze, unless of course you are trying to use super sophisticated programs such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. Trying to learn these complex programs can leave you pulling out your hair trying to wrap your head around concepts such as containers, scratch disks, and multiple timelines. If basic editing skills are what you are looking for, I would suggest trying out QuickTime.

Getting Started:

If you have a Mac, this application is probably already installed.  If not, here is the link to download your free version.  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.  Once downloaded, you are only a few easy steps away from posting your instructional video.

First make sure your file type can be opened in QuickTime and supported by the Power Learning 21 site. File types that are supported are avi., flv., wmv., and mpeg.  If QuicktTime is not your default player for video files, you will want to right click on your file and choose to open it with QuickTime.

Next you will want to verify is the time code or current frame number of your video.  You can find this on the bottom left corner of your QuickTime window, next to our timeline.  You click on the number to switch between the two outputs.  You are able to manually insert a time code or frame number to control where your scrubber will jump to.

Now it is time to start editing!

Again, this program is for basic editing only and is best used to remove, combine, or rearrange existing video segments.  Drag your scrubber to where you want to start cutting. Editing your video is just like editing a document: you are basically editing by cutting and pasting from to create a condensed document from original content.

Let me give an example.  Suppose you want to cut out some introductory music from the beginning of your video. Follow these easy steps:

1.  Play video until the point where you want to start and pause video
2.  Hit the letter “i” as this will be where you will set your in point.  Be as precise as you can so you don’t miss any audio or video frames.
3.  Next you need to determine an out point.  Drag your scrubber to where you want your video to end and press “o”, for out point.
4.  You should see a dark gray bar between your in point and out point markers. Going back to editing a document example, think of this as a selected paragraph that you are going to edit.  Click on edit and then copy to copy your selection. Next open up a new video player by clicking on file and then new, and copy the video over.  Now just save your video (remember to save as a self contained video) and you are ready to upload to the Power Learning 21 website!

If you need more help with editing your videos, check out these QuickTime tutorials.

Students and Teachers face Dilemma as School Year Shrinks.

Students and Teachers face Dilemma as School Year Shrinks.

Amongst the budget crisis in California, many California school districts are forced to reduce the number of days in the academic school year.  Districts including San Francisco, San Jose and Fremont in the Bay area, are faced with this horrible crisis.  If experts in education are advising us that more class room time equals better grades and better performance, why is California putting their children even further behind nations like South Korea, with 220 school daysa year,  and Switzerland, with 228.  As education systems in foreign countries improve, it is only necessary that the U.S. formulates and implements new strategies to adapt to competitive forces like this.

With the budget deficits, districts in the state of California will remove as many as 5 days from the academic school year by giving teachers and other academic staff unpaid furlough days.  In addition to shrinking the academic school year, related cuts like decreasing class sizes, laying-off teachers, and closing libraries, will carry on by California.  Not only are the students effected by the crisis, teachers will lose about a half-percent of salary for each day that is cut.  This results in teachers losing about an average of $2000 from their annual salary.

Yes, it’s horrible news that teachers are encountering salary reductions and even worse that students will be spending less time in the classroom.  If you’re a laid off teacher, a laid off employee, or if you’re just a student, Powerlearning21.com helps bridge the gap between no work and some work.  As teachers struggle with issue in our traditional teaching market, other teaching markets are increasingly growing.

PowerLearning 21 is a media hub for teachers, tutors and students across the world, providing educational content on a variety of topics. PowerLearning21, or “PL21” for short, provides a state of the art content-sharing platform that allows “teachers” or “tutors” to upload instructional videos to be purchased by other users, “students”. PL21 defines these terms lightly, as anyone can be a teacher or student in a given subject provided they have background or prior knowledge of the topic.
